Growth Update: Acid Bog Paludarium

Growth Update: Acid Bog Paludarium

We have a few updates for this paludarium setup planted to emulate a native acid bog, a special kind of wetland habitat dominated by Sphagnum mosses and other plants adapted to acidic, low nutrient conditions.

The paludarium was planted about a month ago and the bed of Sphagnum moss has begun to green up and fill in. The native sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) also shows visible progress, as does the tiny Family Ericaceae shrub, small cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos). The other ericaceous shrubs have not made much headway, but all of them have established well in our other similar setups, so we expect good results from them.

These photos also show a few of our special hardware solutions, including the 60mm Fan Mount and fitted acrylic frame top.

Thanks to GlassBoxTropicals.com for the EpiWeb planting substrate. Thank you Reeseville Ridge Nursery for most of the plants.

Hillstream Heater Mount: A New Aquarium Heater Mount System!

Hillstream Heater Mount: A New Aquarium Heater Mount System!

We are sharing a new product concept for the first time here as a sneak peek. We have found the heavy-duty suction cups supplied with our products such as the Aqua Verdi Riparium Planter, the LOGIC 31 Aquarium Filter and the Sunfish Aquarium Planter to be a superior option for positioning hardware in the aquarium: as long as the glass is carefully cleaned before mounting, these suction cups maintain a strong grip for a long time. We have some of these suction cups that have been in constant service for more than three years.

With the idea of extending the use of these high-quality suction cups to other aquarium products, we have designed the Hillstream Heater Mount, an after-market accessory for use with one of the best aquarium heater options, the EHEIM Jäger series of tthermostat heaters.

It's easy to use the Hillstream Heater Mount. Simply remove the pair of suction cups from the plastic bracket holder, then position the pair of suction cup studs through the matching holes in the Hillstream. A pair of light plastic zip ties wrapped around the holder and through the Hillstream secure the holder in place. Attach the Hillstream + holder assembly in the desired position on the aquarium glass, then mount the heater.

The Hillstream Heater Mount kit is supplied with a laser-cut acrylic mount plate, a pair of heavy-duty suctions, light plastic zip tie and an instruction sheet.

Watch for the Hillstream Heater Mount in the Aqua Verdi online store soon! We hope you will like this handy new aquarium accessory.

NOTE: this product is an after market accessory for mounting aquarium heaters and it does not include the aquarium heater.  The aquarium heater shown in these photographs with the product is for scale and reference only. This product is in no way licensed,  approved, or supported by the referenced manufacturer, EHEIM GmbH & Co KG, nor is the referenced manufacturer associated in any way with this product's manufacturer.

New riparium plants in the online store!

New riparium plants in the online store!

We've added several new plants to our list of riparium selections. They include the most versatile choice for creating a grassy background, as well as several lovely flowering plants.

Acorus Japanese Sweetflag is especially well-suited as a riparium plant. Growing to about 14" in height, it can work well with both nano and larger riparium layouts. The slender grass-like foliage—this plant is not a true grass—arches gracefully over the water to create visual depth. Note the growth habit of Acorus Japanese Sweetflag: it grows from a creeping rhizome that should be positioned at the the gravel substrate surface.

Asclepias Mexican Milkweed is the easiest of all riparium plants to bloom in the aquarium and it might put on a show with its scarlet red and golden yellow flowers just a few weeks after planting. This plant grows especially fast with lost of foliage and fibrous roots, so it might also be a good choice as plant-based filtration.

Zephyranthes Rain Lily, White has spindly, onion-like foliage, but it will delight with its snow white blossoms. For the best luck with flowering, use a root tab fertilizer buried 1/2-way down in the riparium planter. Zephyranthes Rain Lily ships as two or three dormant bulbs. Planted in the riparium planter with the roots down and the very top of the bulb above the gravel, the plants will start to sprout just a week or two after planting in the warm riparium environment.

Spathiphyllum Peace Lily can fulfill any role in a riparium planting and it is very easy to grow. Use several of these plants repeated in several planters to create an authentic Neotropical rainforest stream or swamp biotope. It will also work well mixed among various other plants as an accent. Established Spathiphyllum Peace Lily will bloom with a beautiful white floral spathe.

New video! LOGIC 31 Installation & Operation

New video! LOGIC 31 Installation & Operation

In our previous post we introduced our most exciting new product, the LOGIC 31 Aquarium Filter, with a detailed assembly video. The LOGIC 31 uses an innovative water movement scheme combined with time-tested parts and materials.

We have made a new video providing a few specific aquarium installation tips for the LOGIC 31. Follow this link to watch on our YouTube channel:

LOGIC 31 Installation & Operation

The video also explains a few more of the advantages of the LOGIC 31 design. This list summarizes important points:

  • Installation - use a razor blade or similar edge to thoroughly clean the aquarium glass before attaching the filter. With proper installation the heavy-duty suction cups supplied with the filter will hold with a strong grip for a long time.
  • Splash-free - the Jetlifter Filter Tube bubble stream is contained within the filter box, so there is no bubble splash to damage or foul equipment on top of the aquarium, such as lighting, auto-feeders or the wood canopy.
  • Clean design - with its large Poret Foam block the LOGIC 31 measures 8" tall by 4.25" wide, but it is a simple rectangular shape that follows aquarium geometry. The opaque black acrylic color blends in with dark aquarium backgrounds.
  • Easy airline operation - the LOGIC 31 water flow is driven by an aquarium air pump with 1/4" airline hose. There is no magnetic impeller inside of the filter to  potentially fail with a jam.
  • Gentle water flow - the Jetlifter Filter Tube can produce a water flow as fast as 90gph, but the circular filter return hole is 1" in diameter, so it creates a gentle, broad circulating water flow in the aquarium. This might be very appealing for shy fish such as bettas, Apistogramma and nano species. Add an aquarium circulation pump or powerhead for more active fish.

An additional important feature of the LOGIC 31 is the ease with which the Poret Foam can be cleaned after operation. By removing the transparent green top, you can easily remove the foam block without having to detach the filter box. Shake the filter under cool tap water or siphoned tank water to rinse clean, then return to the filter box. In contrast, most submersible power filters require removal of the whole filter box for cleaning, while canister filters require removal of the O-ring sealed impeller head and further disassembly for cleaning.

Thanks for reading! We hope you will enjoy using the LOGIC 31 with your aquarium setup. We think it will be an especially appealing choice for small (10-30 gallon) display aquariums.

We will have more updates on the way. In addition to the LOGIC 31, we will also offer two additional models for larger aquariums. Scroll down to see a few sneak peek photos.
